December 26. The attack is noticed by Andrew Gross, a University of California at San Diego graduate student who works with Tsutomu. He detects that someone has edited log records in an effort to hide their presence. He informs Tsutomu, who is on his way to dinner in Palo Alto with Mark Lottor.

December 27. Tsutomu flies to San Diego to examine his computers and repair the damage. A threatening message is left in Tsutomu's Supercomputer Center voice mail, bragging about the skills of the intruder.
